Social Media Detox

Hey Family! Let’s chat. I know, I’ve been MIA!

I thought I’d give you a much-needed update on what’s been going on with me & my absence from my website & Youtube channel.

I decided to take a 30-day break from all of my digital content & social media accounts to focus on work & home life. This break gave me room to work on a lot more than that!

Some of you may know, I’ve recently decided to go back to work. I took a year off to focus on my health after being sick with Covid-19. If you want to read more about my experiences with Covid-19, check out this article: I tested positive for Covid-19.

The decision to go back to work took a lot of thought and was hard to make, though I am glad I made it.

Work Life

To give some context to what I do, I am a laborer in a well-known energy refinery. I work outside for the most part. Climbing ladders, staircases, lifting objects well over 40 pounds, operating heavy equipment, and more.

My job is in a male-dominated industry, and I use my knowledge to dominate and stand out.

The first condition of me going back to work was that I get vaccinated. I could not see myself working around people without protecting myself and others.

The second condition was that I be optimistic and flexible with my schedule and work ethic. I am a hard worker, and sometimes my body cannot keep up. This time around, I promised to give myself grace by working smarter not harder.

I love what I do. It is challenging, fun, and I get to work with so many different industries. To say the least, this job is very demanding of my time and creativity.

I decided to take a break from my digital content and focus on reacclimating myself to my job. I am so thankful I did. I was able to be fully present in my personal and professional life.

Being Present Without Social Media

By digital content, I mean all of my social media, my blog & my YouTube channel.

It was very hard at first, but after the 1st week, I got used to it. I began reading physical books a lot more, building back relationships I let go by the wayside, and investing more time to my mental & overall health.

I needed to take a step back and process my actions and how I was shaping my life.

I used the feature in the settings section of my iPhone labeled Screen time. This feature tells you exactly why you picked up your phone, how long you used an app & your overall screen time. It was a major eye-opener for me.

I had no idea I had been wasting so much time on distractions that held no value in my life.

Atomic Habits Changes The Game

I started reading Atomic Habits by James Clear & this book put so many things into perspective. The strategies he lays out in this book will help you identify what you need to change and create a system to maintain long-term results.

‘Atomic Habits will reshape the way you think about progress and give you tools and techniques you need to transform your habits.’- James Clear.

The biggest takeaway I got from this book is, ‘You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.’ No matter what your ‘goal’ is, you have to have a system in place to achieve it & utilize it beyond that goal.

I started this absence from social media as an attempt to free up time & gain mental clarity. I did not know that I would be implementing strategies to make me a better person in the long run.

Steps Forward

As my 30 days away from social media comes to a close, I know I control how I spend my time and what I allow myself to focus on. Using tools like Screen Time, deleting apps off of my phone, and time blocking to accomplish tasks will be keys to maintaining my success.

Giving myself grace and changing my perspective has helped me gain the clarity I was searching for. I highly recommend you check out Atomic Habits by James Clear! What are some other books you recommend? I would love to hear about them in the comments.

Thank you so much for being here!
